Hey There
My name is Amanda and my partner in crime is Seaka! We have been training together since she was six weeks old! She is now currently two years of age and has been the reason I feel like I have my life back.
Our Journey
In 2018 my health took a huge plunge. I have severe allergies to many scented products. If I get a whiff of anything that is chemically made I would have severe breathing difficulties. My asthma will flare up and my vocal cords will spasm, this typically leads to a trip to the emergency room and in extreme cases, the ICU.
Going out into public became daunting and terrifying. I never knew if I would make it through a meal at a restaurant or finish my grocery shop without having to be driven off to the hospital.
That's where Seaka comes in! With the help of a local group who owner-trained their service dogs, they gave me guidance and advice on how to train my own dog. With advice from a friend, I went to see Bill Grimmer in Shediac to work with my eight-week-old German Shepherd. There I learned about scent detection and the importance of building confidence in a puppy. Throughout the next two years, I trained multiple times a day with Seaka, sharing my training videos with Grimmer, where he would critique and provide feedback on my training.
I made service dog training my passion by training Seaka. In the winter of 2022, I decided to take an online Dog Obedience Course through International Career School to help gain theory knowledge of dog training. After completion, that is where my dog training journey began! I got my feet wet by training pet dogs in basic obedience, along with helping owner-trained service dogs.
I want to help make a difference in other people's lives who can benefit from having an owner-trained service dog! By training your own service dog, the connection between you and the dog will start early and that bond will create an amazing team.
Not only do I enjoy training dogs but dogs in general! I have helped Leidenschaft Kennels whelp two litters of puppies. After the tragic whelping of the P-litter and the loss of the Dam, there were 16 puppies who needed feeding and raising. I sat in the whelping box for two and a half weeks raising as many of the puppies who were strong enough to make it. I returned to help whelp the Q-litter, which was a successful whelping of nine puppies.
